What is oral surgery?
Oral surgery is a field of dentistry that includes the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the teeth, gums and jaw. It can include procedures such as tooth extraction, wisdom tooth removal, placement of dental implants or treating severe oral infections.
Here at Cotteswold House Dental Care, we perform these forms of oral surgery routinely using a local anaesthetic. Our highly skilled dentists use the most advanced technology with a high standard of patient care to ensure you always feel at ease when you’re in the dentist’s chair.
How is oral surgery carried out?
When you first visit our surgery, you will see a dentist who will conduct a thorough assessment, check the health of your mouth and teeth and discuss any treatment options using jargon-free language.
If you need oral surgery, our team will discuss your options then arrange an appointment to begin your treatment.
At your next appointment, your dentist will use a very fine needle to inject a local anaesthetic into your mouth. Once your mouth is numb, your dentist will carry out the oral surgery required then when finished, provide after-care advice.
Oral surgery under sedation
For nervous patients or those who simply want to make the process a little more relaxed, we are now able to offer intravenous sedation for oral surgery. This is also known as ‘conscious sedation’ as you remain awake, but in a pleasant and relaxed state. This makes sedation an ideal option for longer treatments too, as the time passes quickly. You will feel drowsy afterwards and will likely not remember much about the procedure.
If you are interested in receiving oral surgery under sedation and would like to find out more about the process, please contact us and we’ll be happy to book a free consultation with our Treatment Coordinator or Sedationist.
